MudGate questions and answers
These quick answers cover starting, saving, choosing a character, exploring, combat, and playing with others.
What is MudGate?
MudGate is a fantasy role-playing and exploration game inspired by classic text-based MUDs. It combines a visual world with commands, designed realms, generated dungeons, classes, abilities, and equipment.
Can I play without downloading?
Yes. Start in a web browser as a guest without creating an account. Read about browser play or follow the getting started guide.
Can a guest save progress?
No. Guest play is a limited demo session and cannot be saved. Register the active guest to enable saving and retain the character's current level.
Where can I play?
The web version is a free shared multiplayer world. The Steam edition hosts its own Windows game, while Nexus Relay carries supported events from the shared web world into that game. Compare them in the platform guide.
Can I play solo or with others?
In the shared web world, you can explore alone or form a party. Steam hosts can play solo or use online or LAN co-op with up to seven friends. See the solo and co-op guide.
Is combat real-time?
No. Combat and movement use two-second turns. Actions use dice notation such as d20, and the game log reports the results. Learn about combat and damage.
Where do new players begin?
New players normally begin in Lowbird Forest, a tutorial realm. Browser guests enter immediately as a human Shield Knight; registration lets you choose a playable race and class and save progress.
How does progression work?
Levels, stats, abilities, equipment, and exploration progress open more options. The character builds guide connects those systems.
What happens when I die?
Resurrection returns you at a safe location with partial health and energy. Carried gold and unspent experience may be lost. See death and recovery.
How do shops and gold work?
Stores use inventory controls, while merchants and bankers expose commands. Read the trading and gold guide.
Can I build a home?
Long-term progress can lead to a private sanctuary for storing items, customizing living space, and inviting friends. See the sanctuary guide.
What are realms and dungeons?
A realm is a designed world area. A dungeon is generated with changing enemies, traps, secrets, and rewards. Browse known realms or read about dungeons.
Does MudGate use commands?
Yes. Commands support communication, inventory actions, searching, and nearby interactions alongside visual controls. See the command guide.
Where can I learn the story?
Begin with the spoiler-safe world and lore guide, then see how objectives and journals record progress.
Where can I get help?
Use the Player's Guide in the game, join the official Discord, or email post@mudgate.com.
